Then the farewell: his parents wanted to see where he was going to sleep (which today would be considered a normal request) but the headmaster said, ‘No – do that at half term.’ The parents were advised to just leave because there was ‘lots for him to do this evening’. The boy reflects: ‘Why was he talking as if I did not exist?’34 Thus it was that the parents were advised by the headmaster to leave without ‘making a fuss’.

The moment-to-moment distancing from self is described in the approach to the dreaded separation:

All the way in the car I had broken the journey into miles, and half miles, and quarter miles, and hundreds of yards, and inches. That way, I still had ages with mum and dad, if we took the trunk upstairs to my dormitory together, then came downstairs together and said goodbye. I could make every second feel like an hour. But Beak (the Headmaster) had decided we were at the end. As the thought sank in my neck suddenly went floppy and I stared at the floor.35
